Truma Combi D6 diesel heater for large motorhomes, campervans and caravans: up to 6 kW from the diesel in your tank

The Truma Combi D6 diesel heater is the most powerful of the next-generation Combi D range: six automatic stages, up to 6000 W, and a 10-litre water heater in the same unit. Truma describes it as a powerful diesel heater designed for large vehicles, which heats and supplies water at the same time.

Although it outperforms the Combi D4, it keeps its size: it measures 510 x 450 x 300 mm and weighs 14.8 kg, just like the D4. Truma highlights its extremely compact design and how light it is compared to other heaters of similar power. Because the fan assists the burner, the motorhome also keeps warm while you drive.

It uses between 0.1 and 0.6 l/h and accepts HVO, and you can buy it with the iNet X Panel or the iNet X Panel 2. A qualified technician must fit it, though, and the box does not include the exhaust system, the water connection set or the tank connection kit. If you want to see more from the brand, browse the Truma products in our shop.

Benefits of the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater

  • Six power stages, from 1000 W to 6000 W (max. 6.6 kW): the highest output among the next-generation Combi D models.
  • According to Truma, it is a powerful diesel heater designed for large vehicles.
  • Same dimensions and weight as the Combi D4, so it needs no more installation space.
  • Fuel consumption of 0.1 to 0.6 l/h, and only 0.1 l/h at an average output of 1000 W.
  • It takes its fuel from the vehicle's own tank, through the connection kit that suits it.
  • Truma permits operation while driving, with a fan-assisted burner.
  • Runs on EN 590 diesel and HVO to EN 15940, up to a limit of 7% biodiesel.
  • Built-in 10-litre water heater: in summer, it heats the water independently of the heating.
  • According to the brand, the built-in pressure sensor lets it heat at any altitude.
  • Choice of control panel: iNet X Panel or iNet X Panel 2, with a 4.3" touchscreen and Bluetooth app.

Is it compatible with your motorhome, campervan or caravan?

Firstly, the vehicle: Truma only considers motorhomes of class M1 and caravans of class O. A campervan must therefore have motorhome approval. Commercial vehicles (class N) do not qualify, nor do buses or boats. Size matters too, because the Combi D6 is the one Truma recommends for large vehicles.

RequirementWhat Truma says
Approved vehiclesMotorhomes of class M1 and caravans (trailers) of class O.
Installation prohibitedCoaches and buses (M2 and M3), commercial vehicles (class N), boats and other watercraft, hunting or forestry huts, weekend homes, canopies, and trailers or vehicles for dangerous goods.
Vehicle sizeLarge. For small and medium-sized vehicles, Truma suggests the Combi D4 (E).
FuelFrom the vehicle's tank; the recommended connection kit depends on the model (see the tables below).
On the move and refuellingOperation permitted while driving; the unit must not be used while refuelling.
Room temperature sensorExternal; the vehicle manufacturer sets the sensor position according to the vehicle type.
Window switchMandatory if the wall cowl is below a window that opens or within 30 cm of one (EN 1949).
Mains waterPressure reducer and non-return valve when connecting to a mains water supply.
Warm-air ductsNecessary: the unit cannot work without them.

You also need to measure the space carefully. The unit measures 510 x 450 x 300 mm, while Truma asks for a minimum installation space of 540 x 500 x 350 mm, with extra room for the connections and the drain valve. While the heater is running, leave 1 m or more between the wall cowl and any wall, building, tent or vehicle.

Tank connection kit for the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater, by vehicle

Because it feeds from the tank, the Combi D6 needs a kit that Truma assigns by vehicle. According to the brand, that assignment may change or grow. We start with the Fiat Ducato 250, Citroën Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, Iveco Daily, Renault Master and Renault Trafic, and the figures in brackets refer to the notes at the end.

How the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater works

The principle is the same across the series: the circulation fan takes cold air from the vehicle, warms it in the heat exchanger and then returns it through the ducts to up to four outlets. With the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater, however, the unit runs through up to six stages according to the difference between the set temperature and the ambient temperature.

Heating, water or both

While in winter the tank water heats up together with the living area, in summer you can heat it without running the heating, and the burner switches off once the water reaches the chosen temperature. The tank does not have to be full when you only want to heat the vehicle. But Truma warns that the water can reach 70 °C and recommends a mixer tap.

On the move, fuel and altitude

Truma allows heating while driving, and the burner works with fan assistance to run well on the move. However, avoid letting the vehicle's tank reach the reserve mark, because the unit would draw in air and the supply would turn irregular; and do not use it while refuelling.

EN 590 and EN 15940 diesel work, and Truma states that diesel heaters run on pure HVO, such as HVO100, and on blends of it with fossil diesel and B7. The heater does not accept a blend with more than 7% biodiesel, nor used oil, rapeseed oil, alcohol or petrol. According to Truma, the pressure sensor also lets it heat at any altitude.

At temperatures below 0 °C, refuelling with summer diesel can cause problems, and below -20 °C you must check whether the winter diesel is suitable. After refuelling with winter diesel, keep the unit running for at least 15 minutes so that the lines fill up.

iNet X Panel or iNet X Panel 2: what changes on the Combi D6

You choose the control panel when you buy. With either of the two you control the heating, the air-conditioning system and the Truma LevelControl, either from the 4.3" touchscreen or from the iNet X App. In fact, only the following details change, as published by Truma:

ItemiNet X PaneliNet X Panel 2
4.3" TFT-LCD touchscreenresistivecapacitive
Weightapprox. 150 gapprox. 190 g
Dimensions (L x W x H)96.7 x 120.1 x 31 mm89 x 118 x 31 mm
Low-battery warning in the appNot published by Trumayes: the app warns you when it needs replacing

The rest is common: 12 V supply (8 V to 16 V), 1.5 W consumption, TIN, CI and CAN buses, Bluetooth Low Energy, -30 °C to 60 °C, a CR 2032 battery lasting about 8 years, and IP20 protection at the front and IP00 at the back. Both have Home and Back buttons and support up to 3 mobile phones at once and up to 6 timers.

Updates install from the app over internet and Bluetooth and can take up to 15 minutes. Remote control needs the iNet X Connect module, optional and not included; according to Truma, the iNet X Connect does not work in Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey, Belarus or Russia.

Installation and fitting by qualified technicians

For safety, Truma reserves fitting, repair and functional testing for qualified technical personnel. Anyone who is not qualified must therefore not open the unit, move it to another vehicle, modify it or repair it. The installer must also place the yellow warning stickers in a clearly visible place in the vehicle, for example on the wardrobe door.

The technician also has to add what the box does not include: exhaust, water connection set with FrostControl, tank kit and warm-air ducts. Also, Truma requires you to keep the operating instructions in the vehicle at all times.

Frost and FrostControl on the Combi D6

The FrostControl valve opens by itself below about 3 °C and empties the tank; you can close it by hand when it reaches about 7 °C. Because Truma does not cover frost damage, empty the water if there is a risk of frost. If you want to fill the tank sooner, there is an optional heating element that warms the valve to about 10 °C.

What's in the box and the accessories you need

Here is what comes in the box, depending on the control panel you choose. Remember too that the unit needs warm-air ducts, but the box contents do not list them.

  • With the iNet X Panel: heater, room temperature sensor, iNet X Panel, 6 m control panel cable, fuel line, metering pump and fixings.
  • With the iNet X Panel 2: heater, room temperature sensor, iNet X Panel 2, control panel cable, fuel line, metering pump and fixings.

By contrast, you must buy these parts separately because the box does not include them:

  • Exhaust system: Combi D pipe kit with silencer and ZR 80 wall cowl, with its inner and outer parts.
  • Water connection set FC TB (36100-01) or FC JG (36100-02): it is the one that includes the FrostControl valve.
  • Tank connection kit, depending on the vehicle.
  • Warm-air ducts and air outlets.
  • FrostControl heating element and iNet X Connect remote module, both optional.

Who is the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater for?

Because it offers more power, the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater targets people with a large class M1 motorhome or a class O caravan. For example:

  • Owners of large motorhomes who travel in the cold and need more power for a spacious living area.
  • Anyone who spends long periods on board and needs heating and hot water at the same time.
  • Anyone looking for heat while driving, with a fan-assisted burner.
  • Anyone who does not want to depend on gas cylinders and prefers to use the vehicle's tank.
  • Anyone who wants to choose between a resistive and a capacitive screen on the control panel.

However, if your vehicle is small or medium-sized, Truma points to the Combi D4 (E). And if you are looking for other equipment, have a look at the water heaters section.

Maintenance, cleaning and warranty for the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater

Since routine prevents breakdowns, this table summarises the tasks Truma lists in the manual to keep the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater in good condition.

TaskWhenHow
Heat it with water in the tankAt least once a monthAbout 30 minutes with the tank full.
Operate the FrostControlAt least twice a yearRemoves limescale deposits and stops it from jamming.
Check the exhaustAt regular intervals and at least every 2 yearsCondition and connection of the double pipe, mounting of the unit and of the cowl, especially after long journeys.
Clean the outer cowlRegularlySoft sponge and outdoor plastic cleaner; no pressure washing in that area.
Sterilise and descale the tankRegularlyCamping cleaning products; for limescale, commercial descalers, vinegar essence or citric acid.
Heat the water to 70 °CPeriodicallyDiesel mode, water at 60 °C and unit on for at least 30 minutes without drawing off hot water; the residual heat takes it to 70 °C.
Restart after a long breakWhen you resume useCharge the batteries, rinse with drinking water and check that the cowl has no damage or nests.
Replace the 12 V fusesIf they blowOnly with original Truma parts and with the battery disconnected.

If smoke comes out of the cowl for more than 1 minute, switch the unit off. And when you park in an enclosed space, switch the heating off, deactivate the timer and do not switch it on from the app, because of the risk of poisoning. Finally, repairs are a job for a specialist technician or Truma's after-sales service.

Manufacturer's warranty

As the manufacturer, Truma grants a 24-month voluntary warranty against material or manufacturing defects, valid in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. However, this warranty does not affect the consumer's statutory rights against the seller.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater the right one for a large motorhome?

Yes, Truma presents it as a powerful diesel heater for large vehicles, while the Combi D4 (E) is the one for small and medium-sized ones. The Truma Combi D6 diesel heater reaches 6000 W in six stages, while keeping the same size and weight as the D4. The vehicle must be class M1 or O, though.

How much does the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater consume?

Fuel consumption is between 0.1 and 0.6 l/h, and only 0.1 l/h when the average output is 1000 W. At 12 V, it also draws 0.4 to 8.1 A with heating and water tank. In addition, when switching on and off, it draws a typical current of 20 A for 2 minutes, with peaks of up to 80 A.

Which tank kit does my Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter need?

On a Sprinter 906 / 907, Truma recommends the TAS 01 or, if the take-off is prepared, the TAS 05. On a Crafter, it is the TAS 01 or, if the take-off is prepared, the TAS 07. If it is already in use, the TAS 06 (or the TAS 10 on the Crafter from 2017). Also check note (2): you may have to lower the tank to fit the kit.

Can I use HVO in the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater?

Yes. Truma states that diesel heaters are approved for HVO to EN 15940, even in its pure form, such as HVO100, and for blends of it with fossil diesel and B7. However, the heater does not accept more than 7% biodiesel: not B10, not B20, not B30 and not pure biodiesel.

What happens to the Truma Combi D6 diesel heater if it freezes?

The FrostControl valve, which comes in the FC water connection set (not included), opens by itself when the temperature drops below about 3 °C and empties the tank. If the vehicle has a drain valve without frost protection, you have to empty it by hand. Truma also excludes frost damage from the warranty, so empty the water if you expect cold weather.
